WINONA, MN (WKBT) -

Food shelves in Winona Co. are hoping for a big boost in donations over the next week and a half.

It's part of the annual "10 days of giving" event being put on by Winona Volunteer Services and Merchants National Bank. They're looking for food and cash donations, all of which will stay in Winona County.

Volunteer Services helps 940 households a month which is more than adults and children. "We know they struggle, we know sometimes they're not working enough hours, we know they're not making enough money, we know seniors are living on very fixed incomes, so it runs the gamut," said Sandra Burke from Winona Volunteer Services.

"It's hard for kids to focus at school because their tummy is hurting and we need to help our community," said first grader Meaghan Dougherty.

10 days of giving runs through December 10th. There will be collection bins at local schools and businesses.

For more on the program or how to donate, you can call (507) 452-5591 or visit winonavs.org.
