Branstad wants further review of state salaries

Gov. Terry Branstad wants a further review of state salaries to address gender pay equity and competitiveness concerns.

A salary database for fiscal 2012 included nearly 60,000 workers with a combined payroll of over $3 billion.

The Gazette in Cedar Rapids says an analysis showed Iowa employed nearly 33,000 women last year with a median salary of almost $46,000. That's 91 percent of the median salary of $50,000 for the 27,000 men in state government jobs.

Branstad told reporters on Monday that he also wants to look at a review that found base pay for some workers in the executive branch was nearly 18 percent higher than comparative groups.

Branstad begins talks with state employee unions next month on new contracts slated to take effect in July 2013.
