LA CROSSE, Wis. -

The State Building Commission has approved five building projects at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The projects, which will cost $155.8 million total, will include a new science lab building, a chilled water plant, a student center, a parking and police building, and a gymnastics practice facility and storage building.

These projects still have to be approved by the state legislature.

"We're very excited about these five building projects that are very much needed on our campus," UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow said in a statement. "It's important to note that program revenue and students are funding nearly $70 million of these projects, while our much-needed new science education facility and part of the water plant are being generously funded through state bonding funds."

The science labs building will be funded by $82 million in total state funding and will be built on the current parking lot north of Cowley Hall. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2015 and be complete by Fall 2017.

The west campus chilled water plant will be funded by $8.4 million, which will be split between state funding and program revenue. It will be located in the current gravel parking lot southwest of Coate Hall. Construction is expected to get underway in 2014 and would be complete by 2015.

The student center will cost $35.3 million and will be entirely funded by student fees. In April 2012, students voted to build a new facility rather than repair the Cartwright Center. The new student center will be built on the current parking lot east of Wimberly Hall. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2014 and completed by Fall 2016.

The three-level parking ramp and police services building is currently under construction and expected to be open later this summer. A fourth and fifth level would be added for $7.6 million in 2014, The entire building cost will be $11.725 million, which will be funded by user fees. The building is going up on the former parking area west of the Cleary Alumni and Friends Center. This project should be complete by the fall of 2014.

The gymnastics practice facility and storage buildings will cost $4.5 million and will be funded by program revenue. The Women’s Gymnastics Practice Facility will accommodate the Women’s Gymnastics Team. The new storage and materials handling building will be a heated and non-heated secure general storage space, along with campus mail and materials delivery, processing and distribution. It will be built on the north campus, next to the Maintenance and Stores and Landscape Services buildings. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2014 and be complete by 2015.
