People in the La Crosse area got their first look inside Gundersen Lutheran's new Inpatient Behavioral Health Building Saturday.
The hospital held an open house for the community from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
People attending could walk through the building and see many of its features including the 34 patient rooms and the additional rooms for adolescents.
There was also a special ceremony where staff shared the importance of bringing more behavioral health treatment opportunities to the La Crosse area.
They say their current unit simply couldn't meet the demand.
"For us, often times when our unit is full and we're no longer able to take additional patients so then those patients end up having to be transfered to another facility,"said Mike Dolan of Gundersen Lutheran Health System. "That's often times 2 to 3 hours away and we're trying to minimize that we would like the people in our community to get their care right here."
More than 500 people came to the open house.
The new facility is scheduled to start treating patients on Feb. 5.
