In Search Of Neighbor s Day

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- La Crosse resident Avanelle Genz is beginning to get her yard into shape for the season. "I've done the front side and the side. But the back of the house to the ally is what I have left. And as you can see, some can be done again because of the neighbors leaves."

Avanelle has always enjoyed the outside work but admits in recent years it's gotten more difficult. "I get so far and then I get tired. Just plain tired. When you get to be my age, it sort of wears on your body."

Well help is on the way for Avanelle and about 200 other La Crosse residents thanks to the 15th annual neighbors day put on by the La Crosse Jaycees. "We organize volunteers to go out into the community to help our elderly and disabled residents clean up their yards for spring. We do raking, trimming, shrubs, turning gardens and washing outside windows."

Avanelle first signed up to get the extra help two years ago. "They'd rake one section and I'd rake another. That's how it worked just fine."

"In order for them to stay in their hoes, they need help with these things because a lot of them don't have family around or neighbors that can help them."

"Anyone that needs help that feels like it's a burden...it's a big help. I don't even care if they don't do a good job, it's still lots of help."

In order for this program to continue to be successful, people need to step forward who are willing to volunteers their time for a few hours on April 16th. "They just need to know how to have fun. Really that's what it's all about. If you know how to pick up a rake and put a little elbow grease into in - this is for you."

"I really appreciate it cause I think it's beneficial. It's really a big help."

The deadline to receive help has already passed, but it is not too late to sign up to volunteer. If you are interested, the La Crosse Jaycees would like to hear from you by no later than this Sunday but the sooner the better.
