DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -

A legislative rules committee will meet to discuss new rules enacted by Iowa's Republican secretary of state that could purge certain voters from Iowa's voter registration list and make it easier to report fraud.

Secretary of State Matt Schultz approved without public input in July new emergency rules that would challenge ballots cast by voters appearing as noncitizens on state and federal database lists.

The Iowa Democratic Party has objected to the rules saying they're too vague and give Schultz too much power.

Schultz is expected to defend the rules at the Tuesday afternoon legislative meeting.

Polk County Judge Mary Pat Gunderson also is considering whether to allow Schultz to move forward with the rules after hearing arguments Thursday in a lawsuit filed by two civil rights groups.
