Officer fatally shoots suspected burglar in Madison

MADISON, Wis. -

The man killed during a home burglary call in Madison Friday morning lived in the neighborhood, according to Madison police.

Officers were called to a home in the 500 block of S. Baldwin Street at 2:46 a.m. after a woman called 911 to report hearing someone in her house. Police said the woman’s husband investigated the sounds.

Police said the first officer on the scene saw two men struggling outside the home and one of the men engaged the officer in the physical confrontation.

The officer repeatedly ordered the man to get down and the man was shot by the officer, according to police.

Police said the person shot was the subject of the burglary in-progress call.

The officer involved in the shooting is a 15-year department veteran and has been placed on administrative leave, according to police.

Madison police say an officer has shot and killed a burglary suspect.

Police were called to a residence about 3 a.m. Friday on a report of a burglary in progress. When an officer arrived, there was a physical struggle with the suspected intruder.

Authorities say the officer fired his service weapon and killed the intruder. The man in his 30s was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the officer was not injured.
