The UW-La Crosse campus will be bustling with students starting on Monday for the spring semester, but before any textbooks are cracked open, the university's chancellor gave his annual spring address on Wednesday.
Chancellor Joe Gow described his speech as a celebration of great things at the university, ranging from a number of national awards and grants, to consistent recognition of the campus' value by a number of publications, and the return of the National Conference on Undergraduate Research this April.
However, Gow says retaining the high caliber staff at the university is a challenge because of on-going budget constraints.
"They haven't had a raise in over five years and you know we win awards and things and get national recognition well the faculty and staff that do that, people can come and recruit them away and say 'hey we'll pay you a little better' so we need to watch that and work on that in the coming budget," says Gow.
As of February 1st, Gow will have been the university's chancellor for 6 years.
