LA CROSSE, Wis. -- -

UW-La Crosse is being recognized for building energy-efficient buildings.

Centennial Hall  just received a gold rating from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

It was built in 2011.

Some of the energy-efficient features include solar panels, windows designed to capture as much sunlight as possible and rain gardens that funnel the rain water from the roof into a garden around the building.

Chancellor Joe Gow says it's a design strategy the campus will continue to use.

From here forward, anything that we build will be done with an eye towards sustainability. We'll have a new student center and also a new science building and another big piece of this is, 'What do you do with the current facilities?' We recycle all of those materials," said Gow.

The newest dorm on campus, Eagle Hall, also earned the top rating shortly after it was built.

It features some of the same energy-efficient features as Centennial Hall.
