LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -

La Crosse police found more than 60 packages of illegal drugs and prescription pills that may have been tampered with in the evidence room after a lieutenant was arrested in August.

The report was released Monday under a La Crosse Tribune open records request.

Former Lt. Brian Thomson admitted stealing and using methamphetamine from the evidence room at least three times last year. He was arrested and resigned Aug. 13 after a sting set up by his department.

Thomson's captain wrote that during an audit of drugs stored in the evidence room, he identified 63 packages containing heroin, meth, cocaine or prescription pills where the envelope or tape appeared tampered with.

Thomson pleaded guilty to attempted possession of narcotic drugs without a prescription. Sentencing is set for Feb. 25.
