Valley Square 6, Carmike Cinema's theater on Highway 16 in La Crosse will close on Sunday, December 15.
Representatives from Valley View Mall tell News 8 it was unable to come to a long-term lease agreement with Carmike Cinemas "and made a business decision. We look forward to announcing a replacement tenant soon."
Rob Rindeman, spokesperson for Carmike Cinemas, says the closure is due to the end of the existing lease agreement with Valley View Mall.
Jackie Speropulos, Valley Square 6's manager of the past three years, says the theater currently employs ten regular staff, two seasonal employees and a janitorial staff. They will all lose their jobs due to the closing. She had no comment when asked about Camike offering job placement to the employees losing their positions.
Speropulos said the theater stopped selling gift cards and annual popcorn buckets last week when they were told of the closure by corporate.
"Any previously purchased gift cards will be honored at any Carmike Theater location or at the Valley Square 6 location through Sunday," Rindeman said. "If customers are interested in a refund for the gift cards please contact Carmike Cinemas Home Office at (706) 576-3400."
Speropulus said she's sad to see the theater close, but recently received a lot of sympathy from the public so far and comments about the good times people spent at the theater. Carmike Cinema's theater in La Crosse opened in October 1982.
In Wisconsin, there are also Carmike Cinemas in Eau Claire and Marinette.
