LA CROSSE, WI -

The city of La Crosse's sewer system isn't working as well as it could be because of things being flushed down the toilet.

Officials at the wastewater treatment plant say wipes, even those labeled with the word "flushable," are slowing the flow.

The problem is the wipes do not break down as quickly as toilet paper and thin paper towels. "Just because it says disposable or biodegradable, it doesn't mean it breaks down tomorrow or the next day, it takes years for these to breakdown," said the Wastewater Plant Superintendent Jared Greeno.

Greeno also said each week they fill a small dump truck of garbage with things like wipes that should have never been flushed. In a year, that's enough to stretch beyond three football fields.
