Homes running on a septic system should avoid running a stream of water.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Homes running on a septic system should avoid running a stream of water, according to Holmen Pumping.

The Septic Pumping company has been seeing a growing number of problems with frozen septics, and water backing up into the house.

And while letting the water run will keep the line to the tank from freezing, your system may flood out easier if the drain field can't handle the increase in water.

"Keep snow cover over the tanks, over the drain field and anywhere your pipes run under the ground, try not to drive over the top of the pipes.", said Justin Happel, a plumber at Holmen Plumbing.

The best place to check for septic backups is the lowest place in your house. Another red flag is if toilets are flushing more slowly.
