Some construction activity is set to begin at an iconic site near downtown La Crosse.
Xcel Energy is working with the state Department of Natural Resources to remove contaminated soil from part of the Southside Oktoberfest Grounds.
Construction trailers and fencing could start popping up this week, but the big equipment and work isn't expected until next week.
Some of the contaminated soil is in the area of three Oktoberfest buildings, including the Bierhall.
Work is expected to end early summer, and officials say the public should not worry about any health issues.
"We work very closely with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on both the monitoring of the soil as well as the air in the area, and don't anticipate any issues with health concerns,” said Brian Elwood, a spokesperson for Xcel Energy.
Xcel is paying for the project, including the demolition and reconstruction of the Oktoberfest buildings.
There is no timeline on the building, but Oktoberfest officials said they did not believe it should affect next year's event.
