Control towers at 3 Iowa airports to remain open

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -

Control towers scheduled to close at airports in Dubuque, Sioux City and Waterloo will remain open through the end of September.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced in a statement Friday that there is enough money under a bill passed by Congress last month to keep the towers open through the end of the budget year on September 30.

The towers -- located at Waterloo Regional Airport, Dubuque Regional Airport and Sioux Gateway Airport-- are three of 149 control towers at small low-traffic airports around the country that were slated to close on June 15. They are operated by contractors for the FAA.

The agency says the closures are part of plans to accommodate automatic spending cuts required by Congress.
