Iced lakes may delay fishing season opener

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) -

Some lakes in northern Wisconsin still have ice on them, and anglers could find their fishing holes still frozen come Saturday's statewide opener.

Heath Benike, of the state Department of Natural Resources, told the Leader-Telegram for a story published Monday that despite recent warm weather, many lakes north of state Highway 64 are still covered with ice.

Jim Onarheim owns a resort on Moose Lake and is president of the Hayward Lakes Visitor and Convention Bureau. He says he's had to tell some customers that they won't be able to fish next weekend. He says the still-frozen lakes are a big blow to area resorts, restaurants, taverns and grocery stores.

Tourism officials say the annual Governor's Fishing Opener at Lake Namekagon north of Cable is still on.
