Children aren't waiting around for Halloween to put their costumes to good use.
More than 500 kids took part in La Crosse's Downtown trick or treat event on Saturday.
Children dressed up in their costumes while downtown businesses handed out treats.
The annual event put on by Downtown Main Street gives families a chance to celebrate Halloween in a safe environment.
But organizers say the event isn't all about the candy.
"We want to to build a community here in downtown. We want people to know it's not just shopping and restaurants, but that it's a neighborhood, and we have a lot of events throughout the year at Downtown Main Street and we really like to have families come down with their children and learn more about the things we have to offer," said Executive Director of Downtown Main Street Robin Moses.
Organizers say about 60 businesses took part in Saturday's event.
