Students at the University of Massachusetts get their school year off to a healthy start -- setting a world record for the world's largest fruit salad.
About 500 students and staff at the university's Amherst campus sliced, pitted and peeled about 150 varieties of fruit to make the salad, which weighed in at 15,000 pounds, according to The Associated Press.
The salad, mixed in a 15-foot diameter swimming pool, included 20 different varieties of apples, 19 varieties of melon, peaches, bananas, oranges, berries and other more exotic fruit like quince and passion fruit.
A Guinness World Records representative certified the record.
Montreal's McGill University held the prior world record with a 11,197-pound fruit salad, Chicopee TV station WWLP reported.
