It's your chance to see life as a La Crosse Police Officer.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

There are still spots available for the La Crosse Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy.

As of late Monday morning, the department received about 10 applications. Organizers hope to have about 15-20 participants.

“We’re hoping that these people that come and go through the academy that first they’ll get an understanding of what the police officers are going through on the job day in and day out and they’ll be able to take some of this information back into their neighborhoods and use these resources that they’ve heard,” said La Crosse Police Sergeant Randy Rank.

Participants will meet each Wednesday, starting March 19 through May 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. They’ll get hands-on training, similar to what an officer may do on a daily basis.

“Such as investigations, firearms, defense and arrest tactics,” Sergeant Rank said. “They'll even get out there and maybe do some fingerprinting, collecting DNA evidence."

Applications are due March 5. For more information on the program, contact the La Crosse Police Community Services Bureau (608) 789-7240.

The Onalaska Citizen Police Academy, which begins on March 12, is full.
