St. Charles mayor to run for Winona County Sheriff
St. Charles Mayor Bill Spitzer announced Thursday evening that he will run for Winona County Sheriff.
Spitzer spent more than 30 years in criminal justice and is in his 24th year serving as a deputy sheriff for Winona County.
“I can bring new ideas to the Sheriff’s Office,” Spitzer said in a statement. “My decade of leadership as mayor will help me guide the Sheriff’s Office into the future.”
Spitzer said he has had many roles within the Sheriff’s Office, including a D.A.R.E. Officer, crime prevention officer, civil process, community policing officer, field training officer. He’s currently the lead negotiator on the Emergency Response Team (ERT). Spitzer recently announced he would not seek a 6th term as the Mayor of St. Charles.
Rob Averbeck announced he was entering the race for Winona County Sheriff on January 13. He spent more than 20 years in the Dane and Winona County Sheriff Departments, including the last ten as a criminal investigator.
Hopeful candidates can start turning in their nomination pages on May 20. It closes on June 3 at 5 p.m. If there is a primary election, it will be on August 12 and a general election would be on November 4.
Current Sheriff Dave Brand has yet to announce if he will run again.
