Students unveil county mural
A group of Vernon County High School students are bringing two long lost institutions back to life.
Students from the Youth Initiative High School unveiled a mural they've been working on for more than a month today in Viroqua. The mural which is on the Vernon County barn honors the buildings that previously stood there. The barn was once was the county's mental institution and before that it was known as the county's poor farm.
While the students researched the buildings, their project turned from homework into a chance to keep a piece of the county's history alive.
"We've had these places at one point where people could go and couldn't pay their taxes and they were poor or if they had mental illness and it got them thinking about what happens now. If these things aren't here, where are they going at this point?," said the students art teacher, Pete Hodapp.
The mural can be seen on the Vernon County barn just north of County BB in Viroqua.
