Two girls help save football season

Like a lot of football teams in our area, Wauzeka-Steuben faced low numbers.
"We had some kids who were ineligible due to grades. We had some kids who were ineligible due to injury. With that being said, we only had about 12 healthy bodies going into our scrimmage," Wauzeka-Steuben District Administrator Mike Garrow said.
They feared the worst; the season was in jeopardy.
"Our athletic director had a conversation with our football coach and basically said our numbers are at risk of not being able to continue the program," Garrow said.
"We didn't want it to happen, so we had to go out and find some people to play for us," said senior tight end/linebacker Hunter Heisz.
Word spread and the Hornets got help from a surprising place. Two girls signed up, essentially saving the season.
"It came down to it, where we weren't going to have a season," sophomore halfback Megan Klema said. "I was serious about being on the football team and said hey, if they still need players, I'm willing to play."
"I was excited," Hornets Head Coach AV Roth said. "I'll take them. We have 27 girls on our cheer-leading [squad] so I was hoping to pick up a couple more."
Megan and Selena were thrown into the fire. They started week one.
"First football game, it was kind of like, oh my gosh really scary," Megan said.
"It really confused me at first," junior cornerback Selena Giddings said. "The plays were the hardest part I had to learn."
Megan and Selena say this is about more than playing football. This is about stepping up when the community needed them.
"A lot of people around the town say thank you to me," Selena said.
"It's a small community and it's a close knit community and people are really willing to step up and help one another," said Garrow.
"We got girls to go out for football and they helped a lot," Heisz said. "It was nice of them. We really appreciated it."
