LA CROSSE, Wis. -

Local organizations are teaming up to send our kids back to school in style.

The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities are working together to get our students all the supplies they need and some new clothes.

Both had been working separately for about the past three years, but decided it was better to join forces.

The organizations are expecting to help 1,500 families with school supplies and 500 with clothes.

And the partnership should make it easier for families in need to get everything they need. "So instead of making them drive from one place to another and spend their money on transportation, which they don't really have, why not put it all in one place and make it easier for them to register and to pick up their stuff," said Julie Nelson from the Salvation Army.

Mary Jacobson from Catholic Charities said, "it really gives them a sense of joy and pride to know they have new school supplies like everybody else, it really makes them feel like one of the other kids."

The La Crosse School District tells us there has been a 10% increase in the last 10 years of students using the free or reduced lunch program. That's a sign to them there is a significant need for this kind of support from the community.

"Back to school is an expensive time for families, they're getting new clothes, new shoes, we've got an extra pair of shoes we need for gym class and all the school supplies, so we do hear from families that there is a great need for extra support for school supplies," said La Crosse School District Community Outreach Coordinator Sue Peterson.

If you'd like to help, donations are being accepted at both organizations or at boxes throughout the community.
