MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -

The University of Minnesota is ready to impose a smoking ban at its Twin Cities campus.

The University Senate has voted in favor of the ban. The Senate includes faculty, students and staff. University President Eric Kaler says a tobacco-free campus has become an expectation, rather than an innovation.

Kaler would impose the ban, which could begin in 2014 after an educational campaign. The Star Tribune says more than 1,100 colleges and universities in Minnesota ban smoking on campus.

A survey by the university's Boynton Health Service found 67 percent of faculty and staff and 64 percent of students support a campus-wide ban on tobacco.
