The Westby school district is trying to learn why parents homeschool their kids or choose open enrollment. Officials also want to see if they can help.
The school sent out a survey to those parents. Initial results showed parents usually opt out of public schools for geographic and personal reasons. However, there is interest in partnering with the school for advanced placement courses and extracurricular activities.
Parents and school officials are also in the beginning process of creating a virtual charter school.
"We're in the process of developing a strategy and an action plan to research our opportunities there are certain grants and monies out there to help us start such a thing, and also what are the curricular areas that people are interested in," says Charles Norton, Westby School District Administrator.
Norton says parents are especially interested in help with science and math. He hopes to have all the research wrapped up by the end of the semester and rollout the virtual school next fall.
