The state of Wisconsin is offering grants to help dairy farmers improve their businesses.
The Dairy 30x20 Initiative offers farms up to $5,000 to help with business planning, animal health and other matters.
Stacy Eberle of Monroe applied for a grant after her husband died in a house fire in 2011. She says the money helped pay for design work on a barn with an open floor plan that allows her to dispense feed with a tractor and mixer and scrape manure with a skid loader. That means she can care for more cows with less labor.
The deadline to apply for grants this year is Dec. 2. The money can't be used to pay off debt or buy land or major equipment.
